In the Lankaran region the chorus songs are widespread. So-called "Halay" tradition of choral singing, i.e. performance of songs while dancing in a ring-group, is still performed here.

Doubtless "Halay" tradition is connected to features of the local labor life, which has been same during centuries. This factor being based on Lankaran's geographical conditions is determining predominance of subtropical cultures - tea and rice, and their cultivation requires large collective efforts. That explains the occurrence of typical chorus-labor songs "Halay"existing only in this region of Azerbaijan.

The performers of the "Halay"genre get divided into two groups, and each group sings in unison. The first group makes a refrain, second strikes up a tune. Then they change roles. Some kind of competition occurs.

The dances in this zone are unusually diverse. The features of national character and features of local household activities emerge in them. These dances are mainly subject dances.

Vivid examples to that are "Hero Dance", "Horse Game". Wedding dances are wide spread. Besides basic musical instruments existing in Azerbaijan, the Lankaran region has its own impact instrument "Lakkuti" (which means, "Joy, fun"). The tool consists of two ingots of different size, in which the internal part is hollowed. The sound is extracted by impacts of the sticks on the top of the ingots. The tool is produced from an oak tree.
